STATUS OF TOOLING SECTOR IN INDIA

Tooling is an essential part of human civilisation, the tools made of stone were the earliest used by the early man, The quest for new tools kept on rising to match the demands of extremely complicated and intricate shapes and designs of the newer products, It is very wisely said that tooling is the mother of all industries, the development of tooling technology is an index of the technologically developed country. We cannot think about product development if we are not geared to have effective tooling technology.

The rapid growth of industries like Automobiles and Auto components, Domestic appliances, Consumer electronics and Consumer durables in the wake of rising economic growth and the consumer tendency towards spending would ensure expanding need for dies, tools and gauges.

The Indian tool room industry today is principally composed of the captive units and the commercial units. The rapid growth of the engineering industry has led to the need for a variety of tooling and related products. Commercial Tool Rooms (CTRs) are more than 35 years old and supply tooling on a commercial basis to a variety of industries and operate as independent companies. There are around 115 CTRs in the country. These exclude over 500+ small units.

The current estimated value of tool making (Press Tools, Plastic Moulds, Die casting Tools, Jigs and Fixtures and Gauges) in India is in the region of US $ 50 million with scope to grow at double digits growth rate every year. (Source: Tool & Gauge Manufacturers Association, 2005).

Most of Indian Tool Rooms are capable of taking on global business. They have invested and maintained their infrastructure equivalent to the best in the world. The same class of quality machines, raw materials and manufacturing processes are imported from world leaders, These combined with the Intellect and class of indigenous manufacturing practices makes Indian tooling industry at par with the best in the world.
